5 Rookie SEO Mistakes
That Can Kill Your Search
Engine Traffic and Some Tools to Help

Mistakes. We all make them, and ideally we learn from them. But even the smallest of mistakes on your website can sometimes cause big problems. And big problems with a website can cause lost traffic, money, and jobs.

With that in mind, here are 5 mistakes I’ve seen often enough to warrant a mention. I hope that you can learn from others who weren’t so lucky:

1. Telling the search engines you don’t want them to add your website to their database or follow its links.

If the pages of your website are not in Google’s database, then there’s no way you’ll ever receive any search engine traffic — targeted or otherwise. Not a week goes by when I don’t see a website where somehow the “noindex, nofollow” meta tags have been inadvertently added to every page (or even just some pages) of the site. Most of the time, it’s due to a WordPress setting that goes unnoticed when the website is first being designed. If you literally can’t find any page of your site in Google, even for a search on the name of the site or the URL, view the source code to see if you have told Google that you don’t want them to index your site.

I use a Chrome extension called “Nofollow,” which highlights all links that have the nofollow attribute, and also pops up a little window if the page is set at “noindex.” This simple extension is why I end up spotting this so often.

2. Relying on SEO software to “optimize” your website.

Repeat after me: There is no specific number of times a keyword phrase should be used in my content. There is no magic number of words that my pages should have written on them. And there is no best number of words or phrases that belong in a Title tag. And most of all: There is no SEO software that can optimize my website (despite the claims of their creators).

Use your common sense to optimize your site! Learn how your target audience searches for products, services and information such as yours, and write about it accordingly on your website. Then write to make an emotional connection with your visitors so that they’ll convert into happy customers.

3. Improper redirecting of old pages (or sites) to new ones via a 302-redirect instead of a 301-redirect.

Whether you’ve changed your domain name to something different or you’ve redeveloped your website and all or most of your new URLs are different from the old ones, it’s critical to redirect the old to the new via 301-redirects and not 302s. A 301-redirect causes Google to remóve the old URL and also to pass the link popularity of the old URL to the new one. But a 302, while redirecting visitors to the correct new URL, will often still be indexed by Google. This causes duplicate content issues and PageRank splitting problems. That is, any links to the old URL will not pass “link juice” to the new one as long as it’s redirected erroneously via a 302.

Check the http header status of your redirected URLs to see if they show a 301 or a 302 via the SEO Consultant’s server header checker tool .

4. Writing to your CEO instead of your customer.

When you’re entrenched in the day-to-day activities of your business, you might forget that the words you use to describe what you do aren’t necessarily the ones that will be used by those unfamiliar with what you do. The people who come to your site shouldn’t need a translator to understand exactly what you do. And you know who the worst offenders are? Marketers! I fundamentally understand marketing at a commonsense level, because it’s a fairly simple concept. Yet when I check out some marketing companies’ websites, they might as well be speaking Martian. In addition to the gobbledygook that many companies write, they also don’t always speak to their potential customer at all. Instead, they try to impress those customers with how great they are.

To fix these copywriting mistakes, find out the words people use to find products and services such as yours through keyword research , and then tell your potential customers what’s in it for them, rather than how totally awesome YOU are.

5. Creating a new site on a new domain and leaving the old site up as well.

I know that it’s scary to develop a brand-new site — especially if (for whatever reason) you must change domain names. But having 2 websites up at the same time is a recipe for disaster when it comes to the search engines. Every time I’ve seen this done (either on purpose or by mistake), the new website rarely gains any traction in the search engines as long as the old site is still alive and kicking. If you’ve spent time and money creating a kick-ass new website, don’t kill its chances of people finding it through search engines by keeping your old cruddy (but highly ranking) site lurking in the background.

Be sure you follow best SEO redesign practices , 301-redirect all your old URLs to the new, and — if you are changing domain names — perform a “change of address” using your Google Webmaster Tools account. After you do these things, your new site should do at least as well as your old site did in the search engines. More likely than not, it will do even better!

5 Steps To Increase Google Traffic

1. Check your Google Analytics stats or any other statistics, which you’ve got installed on your website (if you don’t have any, install one; it’s very easy & very important). If you’re using Google Analytics, go to Traffic Sources -> Keywords. There you’ll see a list of keywords, for which you receive direct clicks from Google.

2. Select 5-10 targeted keywords, for which you receive at least some visitors from Google, and which your potential customers use to find you on the Web. If you don’t receive any visitors from Google yet at all, it’s also fine. Just it means it can just take you longer than 2-3 months to DOUBLE your income. In this case move straight to the 4th step below.

3. Now check your rankings on Google for each of these keywords and select that keyword, for which you’re somewhere between the 3rd and 30th position in Google search results. To do that, select a keyword, make a search on Google for this keyword and see whether you can find your site among the first 3 pages of Google search results or not. If not, select a different keyword and repeat this procedure. If you checked all your 5-10 keywords, but couldn’t find such keyword, for which you’re between the 3rd and 30th position on Google, that’s also fine. It means you may need more, than 2-3 months to DOUBLE your traffic & your income. Or maybe not! Who knows, maybe you are a lucky guy? In any case, move to the next step.

4. Now select only 1 keyword, which is the most targeted for your business, which will more likely bring you more clients, than other keywords. We need to focus your efforts on one keyword to DOUBLE your traffic & income ASAP. It would be perfect if this key phrase consists from 3-4 words. Keywords with just 1-2 words are usually very competitive, and we want to DOUBLE your income within 2-3 months, remember? So that’s why you need to select less competitive key phrase, which consists from 3-4 words, to get the results sooner. (Later you’ll be able to repeat this procedure for more competitive keywords).

5. So you’ve got a keyword. You’re half way of achieving your goal of DOUBLING your traffic & income. You’ve done 50%. Now you need to make an investment – invest either your time or your money, depending on what you’ve got more. You need to get 20 PR1-PR3 text backlinks (learn more about Google PR) with this keyword being the anchor text of the link. Duplicate Content; Good Or Bad?

There is a lot of hype about duplicate content getting websites banned from search engines. Of course, this hype is coming from inexperienced webmasters trying to sell you their service.

If duplicate content is so bad then why do so many websites have it? Here is an example of an eCommerce apparel website with duplicate content:

Each page will display the same page with nearly the exact same content. Shouldn’t this get your entire website banned? No.

So, is duplicate content good? Yes. Engines will see these two pages differently and rank them differently in their index. There are some technical reasons why this works but no worries. It won’t get you banned and will increase your opportunity to get ranked in the engines.

Sometimes it seems like almost anything can be done in “3 easy steps” these days. Losing weight, building a business, earning extra income, getting over an ex, and the list goes on and on. SEO can also be categorized as a 3 step program, but it certainly isn’t easy. In order to find SEO success, all three steps must be carried out efficiently. No one step is more important than the other.

Step #1- Research
Like any marketing campaign, you need a good research-based foundation. Just “winging it” never works out well. For starters, you need to understand your audience and their behaviors both online and off. An SEO campaign is built to attract search engine spiders, but the search engines are only the messengers of information to the target audience. If you aren’t sending the right message you can’t expect the campaign to result in increased traffic or visitors to your site. In order to get a better understanding of how your target audience searches, you must do keyword research. Targeting the wrong keywords in an SEO campaign will result in missing out on potential clients or customers. You also need to have an accurate understanding of who your competition is in the online space based on geographic and business size factors. Find out what your competitors are doing online. Remember, just because they are doing it doesn’t mean that you should too, but it may provide some good insights.

Step #2- On-Site Optimization
Once keyword research has been done for every page of a website, it’s time to incorporate these keywords naturally into the content on the page and the meta tags. Read each page of content and add keywords where they fit. Don’t just stuff them in there in a way that doesn’t make sense. The title tag is the clickable link that should describe what is on the page in 70 characters or less. The meta tag description also describes what is on the page, but you have a little more real estate to work with since the description can be up to 150 characters. The description is the snippet that is seen underneath the title on a search engine results page so it should persuade a person to click on the link. The H1 tag, or headline, is the first crawlable text on the page. If the page includes images, use image tags, since the search engines can’t “see” the image. Each meta tag that is used on the page should be unique. For example, the title tag and meta description tag shouldn’t be the same.

Step #3- Link Building
A well optimized site isn’t enough to get search engine spider recognition these days. The search engines rank sites well that are trusted and a good indicator of trust is the number of inbound links that the site has. Link building is an ongoing campaign to build brand visibility and improve a link portfolio over time. In order to build links, you need to create content that can be linked to. Types of content to create include articles, blog posts, blog comments, social media posts, videos, press releases, and online profiles. As time goes on your content will get noticed by target audience members. If it’s any good (which it must be!), it will be linked to naturally by others.

Get to a PR 3 Ranking ASAP

Climbing to the top of the search engines is the goal of every home base business owner that own a website. A well optimize website alone may help you achieve those goals if you are a niche market with little competition. On the other hand if your niche market is one shared by many marketers, you will have to prove to the search engines that you site has more relevance. The way to differentiate your business from the many on the internet is by creating high quality backlinks.

Many website owners are deterred from generating high quality backlinks to their website either from lack of time or lack of money. The truth is that creating thousands of backlinks does not have to be time consuming or costly. In fact there many ways to generate high Pr backlinks to you website for free. Using the methods I am about to share with you will be able to generate a PR 3 ranking in 90 days or less.

The first thing you must do to create free backlinks is to join five forums related to your niche. Once you have joined five forums, make sure you make a least 10 post per day to each forum. Forums usually have a high pr ranking and they are indexed by the search engines. Furthermore, every one of your post will equal to a high quality backlinks as long as you make sure you include you website’s url in you forum signature.

The next step you will need to take is to submit your website to as many directories you can that are relevant to your websites content. You can either submit
your websites manually or you can use a submission service to speed up the process. In addition to the backlinks, you will also generate a great deal of traffic.

The third step will be to write three articles per week and submit your articles to fifty article directories every week. This method is one of the most effective, because once you submit your articles, chances are they will get picked up by other article directories creating even more backlinks to your website.

The fourth method is to post to one hundred social sites at least three times a week. There are hundreds of social networking websites like Digg, Sphinn, Stumble Upon and Mixx. These social web 2.0 sites have a high Google ranking and also can create a heap of traffic. I suggest posting to one hundred social networking and social bookmarking sites daily. To make the submission faster you should use a social bookmarking software to post to multiple sites at one time.

The final step is to submit your RSS feed to one hundred RSS directories. If you do not have an RSS feed for your website, you should look into creating one. RSS feeds are important in generating backlinks and traffic to your website. In the meantime you can substitute for not having an RSS feed by posting comments to ten do follow blogs daily.

The steps provided will take you approximate 3 hours per day to complete, while establishing a PR 3 website will bring you tons of traffic from the search engines. You may also receive offers from advertisers to display their ads on your PR 3 website thus increasing your income dramatically.
